Tackling the Stress of Life Transitions with Anna

“A life transition- big, small, planned, or unplanned, can impact our lives in significant ways.

If you are in a season of change, you might have noticed an ever increasing feeling of discomfort. Even if your change may be exciting, like heading off to college, the “good” stress can still come with learning new routines, meeting new people, and typically more energy involved than we utilize for everyday tasks.

How do we mindfully navigate transition?

  1. Set Reasonable Expectations: Extra self-compassion and grace welcome here! It can be helpful to remember that feeling stressed during transitions is completely normal. When keeping this in mind, set expectations that set you up for success. If we convince ourselves we should be handling it better or it will be a breeze, we may end up disappointed. Instead, adjust the expectations (and possibly lower them!) for a short season.

  2. Monitor Self-Talk: Is your talk to yourself supporting your transition or making it more difficult? Remind yourself of other transitions you have successfully navigated before, and have seen the other side!

  3. Set Small, Realistic Goals: “What is one small action step I can take right now?” This question helps us stay task oriented as opposed to seeing the overarching big “to-do” list.

  4. Stay Connected: Social connections are essential to times of change. Let others know about your transition, and stay in touch. Keep close those that support and uplift you.
